I found mt-0.5b and it let me set hardware compression (the tape wrote 4.5 gig,
when previously it was full at 3.5 gig).  It looks like I now have a problem
with 8192 block sizes -- 'dd bs=8192 if=/dev/nst0 | cpio -i --only-verify-crc'
seems to hang.
