Yes it detects the ram:

ncr53c8xx: at PCI bus 0, device 13, function 0
ncr53c8xx: 53c875 detected with Tekram NVRAM
ncr53c875-0: rev=0x03, base=0xe4002000, io_port=0x7000, irq=11
ncr53c875-0: Tekram format NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-20, Parity Checking
ncr53c875-0: on-chip RAM at 0xe4003000
ncr53c875-0: restart (scsi reset).
ncr53c875-0: Downloading SCSI SCRIPTS.

In the process of adding a second tape drive on the work system (a WangDat
3800), I noticed that I was mistaken when I mentioned I had set the Archive to
SCSI-2 as opposed to SCSI-1. I set the home system to SCSI-1, and the
2.1.120_pre3 kernel now can access the tape completely fine (since it is an
async only device, it does get the message kernel: ncr53c875-0-<2,*>: SYNC
transfers not supported.).

So my immediate problem is solved with the latest drivers. Did you want me to
try anything else?
