Well, I guess for the most part that's true, but the adaptec 1542 does
bus-mastering and DMA on the card, so it's certainly more efficient than that.

Because of the previous statement you made? From what I understand, it isn't a
very good idea to mix the Centronix 50-pin and the 50-pin fast connector with
other devices as well. In other words, it sounds like an awkward situation
having a 50-pin centronics as well as a 50-pin fast external hard disk, for
example, on the same card..
