No, this was a very good question!!!

I just spent the past week trying to find this out myself.
Unfortunately, the answer is no. I'm telling you this so you won't
spend the next week banging your head against the wall and spending
sleepless nights pouring over online documentation and source code (like
I did). The Adaptec 7890 chipset is not supported at all and will not
work with any of the current generation of aic7xxx drivers. ( I got
this from the author of the driver himself)

If you have a 7890 chip, for now, your best bet is to get an Adaptec
2940uw which uses a 7880 chip (not the 2940u2w - it uses the 7890) and
turn off the 7890 controller via the BIOS setup.

Here is Doug Ledford(one of the drivers authors) paraphrased response to
me about the 7890:

"Currently, none of the versions of the aic7xxx driver for linux support
the 7890 chipset." ... "I'm currently starting my work to get U2W
support in the aic7xxx driver going."

Good luck,
