The rule about a 2:1 ratio of swap:mem is a suggestion. A good one,
but still a suggestion. If you have problems, you're probably better
off just adding another 128MB partition, maybe from another disk that
has nothing too useful on it (like /home :), that way you don't have to
damage your current partition.
Oh, and for the list:
has anyone else noticed that memory (60ns SIMMs anyways, none of that
cool 5 picosecond stuff or whatever so many of you use (lucky sons of
...)) is near $1 a meg these days??
