I have a WDC7000SX SCSI adapter that I am trying to get working with my
SuSE 5.2 system. I configured and compiled my own 2.0.33 kernel with
SCSI support built into the kernel and I compiled the kernel with support
for (only) the WDC7000. I have two IDE drives on the primary IDE bus,
one 2.5GB drive and one 120MB drive. On the secondary, I have a CDROM
drive.

When I boot, the BIOS shows a message describing the WDC7000 and its
software, then (if I have a SCSI drive attached to the card) a one line
message scrolls by quickly. I believe it begins with "Two devices
already..." I can't read much more than that, and then it is gone.

When I do dmesg, I get the following lines:

(With a SCSI drive installed and running)

Failed initialization of WD-7000 SCSI card!
scsi0 : SCSI host adaptr emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 1 host.
scsi : detected total

(With no SCSI drive attached)

Failed initialization of WD-7000 SCSI card!
scsi0 : SCSI host adaptr emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 0 host.
scsi : detected total

When I try 'fdisk /dev/sda' I get:

Unable to open /dev/sda

I have looked through the SCSI How-To (v.2.30, 30 August 1996), and the
device /dev/sda exists. (I do find it odd though that my SuSE install
did not include /dev/MAKEDEV.) Just for good measure I also did 'mknod
/dev/sda b 8 0', and got the message "File exists". I hesitate to rm
/dev/sda, because I don't want to screw anything up, and I am not sure it
would help me solve this problem anyway.

So, I would be grateful for any help anyone on this list could offer.

TIA,

Sean.
