AHA1542 driver changes?

Having a [somewhat old] AHA1542B adapter with a Seagate NT1239NS disk, I
sometimes reach the point where I get the following in my syslog:

Apr 11 13:33:18 udgaard kernel: HACC aha1542.c: interrupt received, but no mail.
Apr 11 13:33:18 udgaard kernel: Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
Apr 11 13:33:18 udgaard kernel: Kernel panic: scsi_free:Trying to free unused memory

This is with recent kernels and this particular one is with 2.1.95, whereas I
don't see it with 2.0.33. After this the system gets into a locked state where
I can't reboot (reboot, halt, ctrl-alt-del doesn't shut down the system) and
any process that attempts to access the scsi disk freezes (kill -9 doesn't
stop it).

Because of the age of these pieces I have tried to test them with 'badblocks',
but that didn't turn up anything, and 2.0.33 seems to work all right.

Do I have a hardware problem that perhaps doesn't show up until recent kernels,
has the AHA1542 driver changed, or what should I expect? It makes 2.1.* kernels
unusable for me, so any hint or advice is appreciated.

Responses that I previously received from posting to linux-kernel suggested
bad termination or that the driver has changed. I don't see any problems with
the termination, the MAINTAINER file in the 2.1.95 tree doesn't have a
maintainer listed for the AHA1542 driver, so I now turn to this list for help.

Thank you very much,

Peter
