As you all remember, perhaps, I complained about my Adaptec 1542CF
locking up under parallel use conditions of my hard disk and my tape
drive. Well, after some more experiments I could get it to lock up
also with parallel hard disk/CD-ROM access. This, BTW, regardless of
whether I enabled synchronous transfers or disconnects for the various
devices, and regardless of the various bus speed settings of the
Adaptec (termination, of course, was on).
The CD-ROM made me suspicious because I had just switched some
adapters around. So I tested plugging in the old Adaptec 1542B, and
indeed, even under heavy load on all three devices, and quite faster
settings (as well as the slow ones I used with the 1542CF), the thing
worked flawlessly. Yes, I had terminators enabled on both
controllers, and all else of interest configured identically.
The 1542CF is now gone back into the computer it came from where it
only needs to busy it with a single hard disk, and manages that quite
comfortably.
I don't know if 1542CF and 1542B are supposed to be identically WRT
their programming. If so, then this was a hardware glitch and I
apologize for the ruckus on this list. If not, might perhaps be worth
checking up onto some time.
Oh, BTW, if you want to answer this, it would be nice to Cc: to me as
I am not subscribed to the list. Forgot to mention this in my last
mail, so am probably at fault for not getting any reply.
Sorry if you replied and found this as useful as talking to a black
hole. It was not done on purpose.
