A number of people have asked me about Adaptec's acquisition of
Symbios. Here's some comments based on my discussions with people at
Symbios:
1. Symbios remains committed to providing the necessary support
to open software developers. That means continued access to
documentation, sample hardware, and technical contacts. In fact,
Symbios is sending me the latest copies of the driver development
tools, programming guide, and 53C895 and 53C896 data manuals
to distribute to driver developers (Gerard - more packages will
be headed your way!)
2. Symbios is considering issuing a letter to the Internet community
re-affirming their open policy.
3. This is not a done deal. It must be approved by the federal
government and there are anti-trust implications.
4. Symbios has asked me for copies of messages posted to Internet
groups with concerns about the the Adaptec acquisition. PLEASE
SEND ME COPIES OF ANYTHING YOU MAY HAVE ARCHIVED. Thanks. This
may turn into a good thing. The acquisition may help make Adaptec
more open and responsive.
5. This is my own opinion, but given that Symbios has been
shipping Ultra2 chips for a long time now (they even have a dual
channel Ultra2 chip), and Adaptec hasn't, you may be more likely
to see Symbios chips builtin to motherboards in the future instead
of the AIC7xxx series chips.
6. Symbios *is* concerned about the attitude of open software
developers towards their products and company. Again, if people
will help me by forwarding various posts showing that people are
distrustful of Adaptec and the future of Symbios products as a
result I will forward these to the appropriate people at Symbios.
Thanks,
Larry
