I have recently installed Red Hart Linux on an old 486sx with a 325 meg hard
drive, about 60 megs of which is for DOS/WINDOWS.

I have not been able to get my optical drive to work off my Adaptec 1522A
SCSI card. The card was recognized by the Red Hat installation software
but now when Linux loads, I get the message
                    scsi : 0 hosts
According to the SCSI HOW_TO this means that the card is not being
recognized, although the aha52x driver loads. It doesn't help to try to
force recognition at the Lilo boot prompt, by entering
           "aha152x=0x340,11,7".

The drive works fine in DOS/Windows and has been for years.

A number of things I noticed:

  (1) The HOW-TO suggests that you check for an unsupported BIOS by
querying debug about the "signature" of the card by checking the initial
BIOS memory area. On doing this, I find that there is no data in the
BIOS memory area: I get all zeroes. But the Adaptec SCSI software
reports that the BIOS is enabled.

(2) It was suggested to me that I enter "max_scsi_luns=8" (or some other
variant of that) when booting. That didn't work, and on booting into
DOS, I see that the card reports: "LUN Support Disabled".

The default settings for the card as as follows:

   SCSI Disconnect Enabled
   ID 7
   Parity Enabled
   Synchronocity Enabled
   IRQ 11
   port 340h
   Bios Addr dc000, enabled

From what I've read, all of this seems standard.

The fact that the LUN support is disabled is reported by the driver, not
indicated in the specifications sheet. And there doesn't seem to be a
jumper setting to deal with LUNs
