Actually, as far as I know, MS-Dos's format does a sector read test as it
formats unless told otherwise.  What that test actually consists of I
don't know, although it will (mostly) reliably find bad sectors on a disk
being formated and mark them as such.  I'm sorry if I misled everyone when
I said "format with sector test", I meant to say "this wasn't a dos quick
format."
