I haven't been following this discussion very closely, but I had a
1542C, and when I upgraded to 16 MB of RAM the floppy drive would fail
intermittently.  Before the 16 MB of RAM it was fine.  That was all in
OS/2.  I now use a 2940 with 32 MB of RAM, in Linux mostly but OS/2
occasionally, and everything's fine.
