The error message suggests, that the HD has an medium error on the sector
specified.
You might want to secure your data and check for badblocks using the
badblocks (-w) program to see if there are more of them. 
Normally the drive should assign some spare sectors to sectors with
unrecoverable errors. You can use the scsiinfo program to display a HD
defect list and see if it's filled up. 
Maybe your HD only reassigns bad sectors when being low level formatted.
You can also mark bad sectors on a filesystem basis using debugfs.
