Buslogic problems... solved :-)

All,

Thanks for the detailed response to my query about running Quantum Fireball
Stratus drives on a Buslogic BT958.

I've now fixed the problem, and it's worth noting the conclusions I've come
to, since this is a common enough combination for we Linux hacks out there.

First thing to try: Patch the Fireballs up to firmware 0F0C. Mine already
were 0F0C, but the patch program didn't tell me that; instead it came up
with an incomprehensible error, and it took me the better part of a day to
get Quantum support to admit that was the case. So, if you try the patch
and get an error including the words "...not in activity table" then you're
already running 0F0C. Quantum support in Europe are useless. Don't even
bother ;-)

Second thing to try: BT958 firmware 5.07B is buggy. Backtrack to 5.06I.
This fixed my problem, _but wouldn't have done if I were not on Fireball
0F0C_.

My system is now rock solid, to the extent that I'm now CD-writing from the
offending Fireballs to a CDR on the same SCSI host. Flawless :-)

Note that all the patches for this are on "www.dandelion.com/Linux".

Merry Christmas
