Setting 'verbose messages' option in the user-setup NVRAM has the same
effect.
You also can use boot option "ncr53c8xx=verb:2" at lilo prompt.

Indeed, 2.6b versus 2.5c makes huge differences with your system. :)
Looks like the SCSI SCRIPTS execution just hangs with driver 2.5c.
I would suspect first something went wrong at selection or reselection
step.
Did you ever give 2.5c a try with both DISCONNECTIONS and TAGGED COMMAND
QUEUEING disabled? With such a set-up, the reselection stuff is not used.
(The driver forces disconnections if tagged commands are enabled, so both
options are to be disabled in order to actually disable disconnections)
This settings can be achieved for each device from the user-setup NVRAM.
(Unfortunately, the driver will not print out any message about
disconnections being not allowed. Have to trust the source code)
Could you try this settings with 2.5c (if not yet done) and let me know
the result.
