I'd rather try the am53c974 or the Tekram DC390(T) driver which use the
same chip. Note that the am53c974 driver is not perfect (and won't be,
because nobody is working on it at the moment AFAIK) and the Tekram driver
is very stable but might refuse to work without the recognition of a
Tekram EEprom (you can work around this with a simple patch: skip the
BIOS settings check.).
