Greetings, linux-scsi@vger.rutgers.edu. The linux-scsi HOWTO seems to
indicate that this is what i should do next. If this isn't the proper
venue for the following, please let me know where to properly direct my
inquiries.
For mostly defensive reasons, i'm undertaking to install Red Hat linux on
my P166 - 32mbRAM; Western Digital 7296a PCI SCSI host adaptor w/3hd's &
CDROM; no IDE devices. When i attempt to boot linux from the floppy they
have you make, i get the dreaded "<4>scsi : 0 hosts." message on the system
log. Further research would seem to indicate that i need to pass a boot
argument (i.e. at the "boot:" prompt, no?) to get linux to recognize my
host adaptor - something along the lines of "wd7000=<irq>,<dma>,<iobase>".
My questions are:
1. Is this a reasonable conclusion? The scsi bios settings seem to be
correct and the machine boots win95 ok.
2. How do i derive and enter the values for <dma> & <iobase> - these seem
to be memory addresses or offsets of some sort; can i get them out of the
win95 registry or use dos "debug" or something?
3. Do you need more information?
While new to linux, i've made my living pushing IBM-OS/MVS mainframes
around for quite a while, so i'm not terribly afraid of core dumps or
hexadecimal arithmetic; hopefully i can learn a little something out of
this. Thanks in advance.
