thanks for your quick replies everyone.  It has been very interesting reading.

The comments have certainly turned me off the adaptec option which is a shame as it seems to be the only on-board scsi controller I can lay my hands on in Brisbane, Australia.  Of course I am assuming that a on-board controller would be faster than a PCI adaptor.  Is that true?

Jeff, have you actually tried a buslogic adaptor?  the below comments seem to indicate that you at least do not own one.

Is it that buslogic are more reliable or is there a performance increase compared to the adaptec option? 
 
.  I haven't tried these disks with
a BusLogic or DPT controller yet, so I can't comment on how good or bad
the raw throughput is.

Sooner or later I'll buy a BusLogic to replace the Adaptec card.
