TEXEL had _serious_ bugs of every sort in their firmware - drives
didn't disconnect and reconnect correctly, didn't handshake correctly,
etc.
I suspect that the resulting reputation was what led to the name
change from TEXEL to PLEXTOR.

Given their history as TEXEL, I find this highly likely.

If you upgrade to Linux 1.2.8 or newer, the NCR driver knows how to
do a hard SCSI reset. This may or may not work arround your problem.
