Hi all!
In my linux box (Linux 2.0.27) I have two Quantum SCSI HDs
(3.2 GB FB/TM) connected to a Adaptec 1542 controller. There
is also a Toshiba CD-ROM and a FUJISTU MOD connected to this
SCSI bus.
A few weeks ago I tried to connect an additional IBM HD
(DPES-31080, 1GB) to this SCSI bus but I failed, because
I got read errors from all disks - there seem to be some
timinig problems on the bus?!
Now, I'm going to order a new machine, an Intel Pentium
Pro 200, which already has a Adaptec 2940U controller in.
It also comes with an IBM 2 GB HD (SCSI-U). I have to
buy one additional HD and I am not sure about the best
configuration of this machine. I am thinking of two
alternatives:
- IBM DCAS 34330 U-SCSI (4.3 GB) or
- Quantum Atlas 2 U-SCSI (4.5 GB)
My questions:
- Is it possible to connect the Quantum Fireballs to the
2940-U without loss of performance? (Are they ULTRA SCSI?)
- Currently I run the Quantums at 8 MB transfer rate connected
to the 1542. Does anyone has experiences with higher speeds?
- Did anyone have had problems in operating a mixed brand
SCSI bus (IBM / Quantum) with Adaptec 2940-U ?
- Is it possible to insert the 'old' Adaptec 1542 controller
as a second SCSI controller beside the Adaptec 2940-U?
(The idea might be to run the existant Quantum HDs with
CDROM and MOD connected to the 1542 and connecting the
new IBM HDs, when deciding to buy the DCAS-U, to the new
Adaptec 2940-U.)
- Any other suggestions how to configure such a machine?
(Of course I know that I will have to reconfigure the kernel to
run two SCSI controllers at a time. But I am not sure if it generally
works with different controllers. The SCSI-HOWTO says 'yes', but
does not say something more specific to the Adaptec 2940-U...)
