An ISA host adaptor would be perfectly adequate for that. I've had
flawless results with the Tekram 300B (an Adaptec 1542 clone). I've also
seen the Ultrastor 14Fx (where x is a letter I've forgotten) for US$30.
At home I use an Adaptec 1542CF, which I'd recommend heartily except that
I had some trouble getting it to coexist with my ISA PnP sound card, and
that it's usually overpriced. Unlike the AIC7xxx cards it's
well-supported by Linux and is very forgiving of incorrect termination.
Cards based on the NCR (Symbios) 53C8xx chips are usually cheap and fast,
but require support in your PC's BIOS (I don't know whether this is needed
to use them with Linux). Here's what Gerard Roudier had to say about
them:
You probably would prefer a board with a NCR53C875 Ultra Wide chip:
- Tekram DC-390/F
- Promise SCSI Ultra
- Symbios SYM8751SP
- TYAN 1365 UW (if it exists)
The Tekram is very cheap and works fine.
I use a Promise board that works fine too, but seems more expensive.
