Hi,
I tried to install redhat 4.2 sparc linux on a Sparcstation 1. The problem
is when doing the mkfs on the partitions. The first 150MB of the mkfs works
very fast but it starts slowing down exponentially. It gets really really
slow and for like 1.5 gig's it takes about 2 hours. The whole installation
works though, and the Linux is installed perfectly. however there is a
problem with disk IO. bdflush takes about 30% cpu or more when the system
is completely idle and sync also takes 2-4 seconds to return. And the
system is doing NO I/O.
I reinstalled Solaris 2.5.1 and it didn't seem to suffer from this problem.
Has anyone encountered something like this? Where the disk works perfectly
but is much too slow on Linux?
I'm not on the mailing list so please reply to me directly.
Thanks a lot, I'd appreciate any help,
Andi
