I have a (rather frustrating) problem with my shiny new ScanJet
5p-namely, getting Linux to talk to it.
First, a few details-I'm running a predominantly RH4.0 system, with a
couple of upgraded bits (libc 5.4.22), etc. The motherboard is a PCI
486, with an Adaptec 2940 controller. I've had no problems with the
Adaptec to date, with it working flawlessly with two hard drives (an
older Quantum ProDrive and a Quantum Fireball) at ID's 0 & 1. I plug
the 5p in at ID 2, and the card recognises it at startup as a device
type "processor" (as well as the other details about manufacturer, etc).
The kernel has general device support compiled in (not as a module), and
the 2940 driver loads as a module.
The scanner itself works-I went through the pain of loading Windows and
the software, and it ran just fine.
So far, so good. The problem comes when I actually try to use it under
linux. Using the xscanimage suite, it complains that opening the device
failed. If I try to use scsi_info on any sg* device, I get a permission
violation, regardless of whether I try the drives or the scanner. I
recreated the /dev/sg* entries (c, major 21) to be sure they were OK.
I've tried as root as well as a user. No dice.
I'm tearing my hair out-I feel certain I've missed something very
obvious, but after a week searching the HOWTOs and the LDP, I can't find
*anything*; the documentation assures me there should be no problems.
