Greetings Scuzzies,
I have just dropped a BusLogic BT-948 into my machine and strapped the
following slightly elderly devices onto its back...
1) A Summus Gigatape. (Apparently the same beastie as an original 8mm
Exabyte but with a different label on the front panel.)
2) A Laser Magnetic Storage Int. Company LD 520 rewritable removable
optical disk.
Some queries for the assembled wisdom...
a) The disk wasn't mounted, but it refused to spit out the disk when I
poked the eject button, but then haven't failed to eject, it refused
to mount the disk (drive not ready). Any ideas?
b) I kill'ed a tar to the tape drive. The /dev/st0 then proceeded to
sulk (device busy) until I rebooted the machine. Is there any kinder way of
stopping the sulks?
c) As I remember things from the very bad old days of mainframes and
mini's, the speed of transfer to tape was very sensitive to the
following factors :-
i. The blocksize.
ii. The speed of computer. (Ie, the the next chunk of data wasn't
ready, the tape drive had to stop, take a step back, then start again
when the next chunk appeared.)
Has anybody any recommendations for blocksize to use when tar-gzipping
from a Pentium 133?
d) SCSI seems to be a very smart interface capable of telling you lots
of things / doing lots of things / ejecting removable disk
etc. etc.. Are there any software tools that speak and poke SCSI?
Thanks from the Scuzzball..
