Hello all,

We have a DEC AlphaStation 250 running Linux, and we're having some real
trouble trying to get it to work with a Philips CDD521 external CD-ROM writer.
We've compiled our own kernel (2.0.27) from the sources that came with RedHat
4.1. We picked the "NCR53C8XX" SCSI driver (the one ported from BSD). The
SCSI bus seems to be stable on hard drives (ie, hundred-megabyte copies and
diffs work okay), but doesn't work well at all with the CD-writer.

Whenever we try to access the CD writer, even to mount a CD for reading
(something which has worked on Linux/Intel with the same writer), we get many
errors from the SCSI subsystem. It will hose the mount command totally (the
process won't die). Similar problems happen if we try cdwrite. I don't even
know what these errors *mean*. Could someone help, or point me to
documentation? The SCSI HOWTO didn't seem to mention this. :-(

The errors usually look something like this:

COMMAND FAILED (4 88) @fffffc00002a7810.
phase change 6-3 1@042a7cec resid=1.
last message repeated 3 times
SCSI phase error fixup:
    CCB address mismatch (0xfffffc00002a7810 !=0xfffffc00002a6820)

... and so on, for a screen or so, until:

scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for second half of retries.
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
ncr53c810-0: restart (scsi bus reset).
ncr53c810-0: restart (ncr dead ?).

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)
