Folks,
I found what was going on with my tape backup. I have (apparently) a
bad sector on the SCSI hard drive that I was attempting to back up. I
had to kill klogd, and the error messages came to the console. So, this
has absolutely no bearing on the SCSI tape stuff; my apologies on the
mis-diagnosis. Now, my question is this. Is there any way to mark the
sector on the hard drive as bad in the e2fs? I have a sector number
from the failure, and I attempted the adaptec bios verify routine, and
it blows out with an "unexpected SCSI command failure" on that sector.
(At least, I am guessing it is the same sector- I do not get a sector
number from the Adaptec error message). I also tried unmounting the
filesystem, and running badblocks on it, but it just dies like the
backup does. I understand that you should never have bad sectors on
a SCSI hard drive, so this will only be a temporary measure until I
can replace the hard drive.
