You don't say which distribution and version you are trying to install.
However, I'm guessing that it is Slackware. I had the same problem
installing the v2.0.0 kernel Slackware 3.1 onto a computer with an on-board
AIC-7860 scsi controller.
I found a series of Slackware 2.0.27 zImages on ftp.cdrom.com under the
slackware/kernel directory. I ftp'd the latest Adaptec one. I used it as
a boot disk with an _uncompressed_ root disk. You may have to rdev the
zImage to get it to look for the root in /dev/fd0.
To make an uncompressed the root disk, just gunzip color.gz to get the file
"color" and then dd that to the floppy. (You could do this with text.gz
also.) The instructions for doing this are in the readme for machines with
low memory.
Hope this helps,
Ed
