Chris-
I am not an authority on tape backup, but I can give you a real-life
story: I've got a Colorado T4000S Travan SCSI-2 and think it's great.
Travan TR4 tapes hold 4GB native. Cost was 370$. I've done one timing
test and got about 24MB/s compressed throughput. The system is a 200Mhz
Micron Millennia Pro2 (PPro) with an Adaptec 2940U controller and linux
versions 2.0.18, 2.0.24, and 2.1.26.
I compared this with 4mm and 8mm tape systems, but there was no way I
could justify spending more than twice as much for no apparent benefit.
Indeed, there appears to be none. (Except that I use an 8mm on an alpha
box at work and it would be convenient to have a common medium.)
When you compare, be careful in evaluating capacities. Some manufacturers
advertise /compressed/ capacity and others /native/ capacity. Typical
compression is 2:1.
I found that http://www.uvision.com/ was a great place to compare prices.
