This may be a problem.

I have a syquest 135 with a adaptec 1522 card.

The 1522 won't boot off removable media.

You could (assuming you have a floppy/hard disk)
boot the kernel from the other media.
Have the kernel have the write scsi drivers.
Then the root device is /dev/sda1 (or whatever).
