Any preferences for PCI SCSI controllers? Or is this a religious issue?

I had a Tyan 1365 (NCR825) Wide SCSI controller which was working OK but it
seems to have a cold lead somewhere and I will be exchanging it with the
dealer. I have the opportunity to upgrade now to an ULTRA-WIDE controller.
Does anyone have any strong recommendations for or against the:
ADAPTEC 2940UW
BUSLOGIC BT-958
Are there drivers for these available (I will hunt myself but I may miss it
so if anyone knows definitively either way)?
Can the driver handle a root partition on SCSI ID 1 (my MS-DOS C: drive is on
drive ID 0 so...)?
