Several people reported the problem of not being able to use the RAID-0
functionality supported by some DPT SCSI controllers. The origin of this
problem is that the DPT software creates a "software RAID-0" rather then a
"hardware RAID-0" depending on the operating system chosen at installation
time. The actual SCSI subsystem in Linux does not handle correctly the DPT
"software RAID-0" configuration.
Using Linux, if you have a "software RAID-0" you are likely to see all the
different disks as single entities instead of a single striped drive.
Using the DPTMGR the "software RAID-0" is represented by the "LSU"
icon and links to the individual drives, while a "hardware RAID-0"
is represented by the "LSU" icon, linked to the "RAID-0" icon.
This "RAID-0" icon is then linked to the single drives.
To create a "hardware RAID-0" instead of a "software RAID-0" you
must execute the following steps:
1. load the DOS Storage Manager (DPTMGR.EXE) and delete the existing
software RAID-0 array;
2. from the "File" pull-down menu select "Set System Configuration";
3. from the "Installation" pull-down menu, select "Initial System
Installation", and when presented with the question "You have selected
[the name of the OS previously selected] is this correct?" respond NO;
4. from the list of operating systems select "Other Unix";
5. once the "Initial System Installation" is complete, repeat the steps
you used previously to create the RAID-0 array.
6. from the "File" pull-down menu select "Set System Configuration"
again to save the new setup and reboot.
Thanks to the DPT support which provided the above information.
At this stage the Linux EATA driver should see a single SCSI drive,
Vendor: DPT Model: RAID-0 Rev: xxx
where xxx is the DPT firmware revision.
