I had similar problems, but I don't have SCSI disks (scanner only).
I my case, the RAM timing was set too tight. I use 70ns chips with my
486 (160MHz) and everything worked fine with 0 Waitstate (DRAM timing
and PCI-to-Memory burst) for some hours. Then, ext2fs went crazy,
putting out similar messages like the above.
I set DRAM timing to 2 Waitstate (1 WS didn't do) and the error never
occured again.
