I use a Jaz drive for automated backups nightly on a 1.3.20 kernel and an
Adaptec 1542 on a small production system. I ocassionally get errors from
the kernel about freeing unused buffers or something, but I expect that with
a crufty kernel. It nevertheless continues to run fine for months at a time.
Remember that the Jaz will spin down if idle for 5 minutes, and takes too
long to spin up, leading to a timeout. So I do a dd from the raw device
(triggering a spin-up) and sleep briefly before trying to use anything else
(like mount) on it.
