Hello,

I've been having this problem with my tape backup and my Adaptech
SCSI controller. About 5 months ago, I got a Colorado T4000s
internal tape backup and an Adaptech AHA2940 UW SCSI card. I also
upgraded my kernel. I was running Slackware 3.0 with the 1.2.13
kernel. I upgraded to Linux 2.0.15. I also upgraded my C/C++
Library, my SysV Init, my procps, ldd, etc. Everything that was on
the upgrade to for new 2.0.x kernel howto's and readmes.
My tape backup worked fine for about 3 months. After that, I
couldn't read or write to any of my tapes. I called HP/Colorado, and
they suggested a firmware upgrade from 1.02 to 1.06. I performed the
upgrade, and reformatted the tapes and everything worked fine for 2
weeks. Then the problem acted up again, so I called HP back and
swapped for a new tape unit.
This worked fine for another 2 weeks, then I got SCSI time out
errors and other kernel errors in my syslog. Also, restoring from
tape went from 1:10 to 3 hours, with out an appreciable size in disk
storage.
I then upgraded to kernel 2.0.26, but that didn't seem to help.
I have several other things on this SCSI bus. Including a Hard
Drive, a CD Rom and an external Zip Drive. I have problems with none
of these devices.
I am including 2 typical error logs from a tape restore operation.
I am hoping that someone here can help with this problem. When I
recompiled my kernel I included support for SCSI drives, tapes, and
CD. Also, I clean my tape heads once every 3 to 4 weeks.

Thanks in advance,

Joseph Possert
