This is dead simple: you had a temporary DNS outage. This frequently
bites sites which run tcp_wrapper (which only works for the inetd
services). If it can't verify the connecting adress, it refuses
connection. After your name server came back up (perhaps someone
rebootet _that_), everything returned to normal.
Which is the reason I configure the machines from which I need to do
remote maintenance as IP addresses in hosts_allow.
