I am posting this to both the PPP list and the NET list because the
problem seems to be common to both.
I have uploaded a version of the Beta 2.2 PPP code to the archive
sites.
The archive sites are:
ftp.netcom.com in the directory /pub/lo/longyear/ppp-2.2
ftp.cps.umich.edu in the directory /pub/ppp/ppp-2.2
ftp.funet.fi in the directory /pub/Linux/BETA/ppp/ppp-2.2
The current file is 950727.tar.gz
Patches from the previous are in 950720-950727.patch.gz
The changes from the previous version are:
1. The problem with the kernel panics associated with having a swap
space and running ppp have been corrected. The trap showed that it was
failing in the tty read and tty write procedures.
I have sent a similar patch to Linus and Alan for the existing 1.2 and
1.3 kernel drivers to correct just this problem.
2. The version numbers have been incremented for both the driver and
the bsd compressor files. These should permit the installation
procedure to function properly. I don't really know why I seemed to
have felt that the number was significant. After all a number is only
a number and there was no reason for being 'so secure' with the
version numbers.
3. I replaced the group with the name 'daemon' in the Makefile. I left
the uid as the number zero since it is typically the root user, but I
went overboard and corrected the 'group' when it was not needed.
The installation script now uses fgrep for fixed strings and no longer
uses '-q' for egrep. The egrep program is still used when I need
egrep, so you will need *a*version*of*egrep* to install the program,
but you wont need 2.0+.
THIS IS STILL TEST CODE. PLEASE TREAT IT AS IF YOU WOULD THE 1.3
KERNEL.
It is still designed to work with the 1.2 kernel if that is what you
have. The 1.3 kernel is not required. However, if you want only
'official', 'stable' code then stick with 2.1.
Also, this code will not work with version 1.1 of the kernels.
