NFS problem with 1.3.11

I have had repeated problems with 1.3.x kernels since 1.3.7 with
NFS. 1.3.11 was the first I had which has been running reasonably
well. Now I find that it boots, mounts the NFS devices but after
some variable time hangs almost silently. I noticed MANY messages
in the message log. Here's an extract:

Eventually the machine just hangs. Note that /usr is NFS mounted
so the machine can't do very much without it! The machine 'delta' is
fine - I can always log in on it without a problem (it's a Sun running
Solaris 2.3). It seems that the NFS code isn't very tolerant with
timeouts. I don't like the "Couldn't get a free page....." warning
though - looks more ominous.
Has anyone any ideas or suggestions? I'm in the process of building
a 1.3.12 kernel, but I'm not sure it will help much.
System: 486/33, Linux 1.3.11, Lance ethernet card.
