Timing out in just a minute is a bit dubious according to the RFCs.
If you need close control over timing, schedule an alarm, or use a
non-blocking connect (RTFM fcntl(FIONBIO) or get the Stevens book).
The former is easier, the latter allows you to connect to several
hosts at once.
