Thanks I figured this out about two minutes after I sent you the mail.

I am still having problems though.

There are a lot of things that could be wrong with my set up but maybe you could
give me some pointers.

1) I have followed the instructions in the documents.

2) I have a sun 3/50 that I am trying to connect to my Linux box.
I bought a gaggle of ne2000 based 10baseT AT compatible cards one of which
is installed in the Linux box. I bought a 10baseT tranciever for the sun
which I have plugged into the AUI port. I switched all of the dip switches
on the Sun motherboard thus (I was told) activating the AUI port on the
   Sun.

3) The Sun starts stops with some message about the EEPROM and the RS232 port.
I do a L1 A to put the Sun into monitor mode and type b le(0) which forces
the boot over the ethernet port.\

4) The Sun gives me the message about trying to get an IP address and then
   sits there forever.

How can I find out wether or not rarp packets are reaching the linux box?
