sendmail woes

Hi all,
I had a strange problem with sendmail the other day that I've never seen
before. I'm hoping that someone else _has_ :-)
I wondered why my mail had reduced from 5-10 msgs/hour to zero, so I
telnet'ed to my mailhost on port 25. I got:
Trying...
Connected to mailhost.
Connection closed by foreign host.
Very strange. I killed sendmail and restarted it, but that did not
help. After rebooting the machine, it worked fine.
Anyone seen anything like this before? I'm running kernel 1.2.13.
