I got the whole thing to work with the assistance of my Internet
provider.

Many helpful people replied. Thanks to you all.

The solution:

1. Recompile my kernel with IP_FORWARD

2. Make sure that all traffic for my subnet was forwarded to my Linux
box acting as the gateway. This required some changes on the remote
end of my main PPP link.

3. Set up dummy routes to the loopback device for all the machines on
my PPP-only local network for when they're not connected.

4. Configure my local hosts with their assigned IP addresses (one is
set up with MacPPP the other with Trumpet Winsock on a Windoze
486). Test that they all login and establish connections properly.

That was all there is to it. ;-)
