You shouldn't need to set your modem to autoanswer when using mgetty.
mgetty waits for a 'ring' to come over the port before telling the modem
to answer the phone. Check to make sure that your modem is returning
'Verbal Result Codes' (ie. 'OK' instead of '0'). It's been a while since
I've used Slackware, but I'm pretty sure it includes minicom. I _know_
slackware includes minicom. Load up minicom, and check to see if you are
able to talk to your modem.... try issuing an 'ATZ' and see what the modem
returns (Should be 'OK'), Also, while using minicom to monitor the port,
dial the number you are trying to connect with... check to see if you see
'RING' print each time the phone rings. While you're at it, watching the
'RING's print out, type 'ATA' and hit enter, the modem should answer the
phone. If that all checks out, (or if it doesn't), do you have mgetty
configured for the right device (/dev/ttyS1 for [M$DOS] com2 or /dev/ttyS0
for com1) in inittab? Are you using /dev/modem as the device? If so, is it
a symbolic link to the correct device (/dev/ttyS?)?

If you are still having problems, feel free to contact me and I'll see if
I can help you further. -- Paul
