rlogin hangs

i was wondering if you could possible provide some input on a problem
i am having with establishing a slip connection to a remote system
from my pc at home.
the problem is that i am able to establish a connection to the remote
system via a slip connection from my pc but when i try rlogin into or
pinging the remote system the command hangs at the command line prompt
with no response. if i let it continue i believe that it would
continue for hours at aa time. any idea on what be the problem???
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thaanks
