The router proves nothing because checksums are computed end->end. Firstly
check your modem link doesn't have problems with overruns and has all
the correct handshaking configured. Secondly check the target machine. Its
remotely possible its some kind of hardware problem, a cache problem or
even a driver problem of some form. Most likely its just flow control
problems on the modem line.

I'm sure RFC1122 says MUST silently discard ;)
