I have a similar problem (it's tcpd that's doing it) with tcpd not
looking in the hosts file. The problem in my case is an alias for a
machine name that's not in the DNS due to problems with fascist
administrators, but I suspect it's the same problem.
The problem is someplace deep in gethostbyname().
