It sounds like the "stuck pty" bug that several other people have been
experiencing since 1.1.x.  If you can determine that the telnets to the
server hang only on a certain pty, try grabbing that tty with screen. 
Then enter a xon via control-a q.  This is the only way I've found so far
to "unstick"  a stuck pty.
