I notice the same thing, but only when I have a ppp connection going,
when ppp is down and I'm just connected to the local ethernet network,
it works great.  I supposed it was just because the modem ppp was so
much slower than ethernet that it just takes a while to build the
routes, especially if it has to access an outside nameserver to get the
route addresses.  Am I right here??
