Point is, that this package only has these utilities:

arp hostname ifconfig netstat rarp route

(and also dnsdomainname domainname nisdomainname and ypdomainname,
which are simply symlinks to hostname).

Oh jeez, really? And if I ever boot my trusty (heavily patched but
highly stable) 1.2.13 kernel again, I can't use these programs? OUCH!

There is also the NetKit stuff, but the "current" versions are getting
a little aged.

NetKit-A-0.10 (June-Aug 95) contains the following packages:
	bootp-2.4.3
		bootpd
		bootpef
		bootpgw
		bootptest
	bootpc.v031
	      bootpc
	dip-3.3.7n
		uucp
dip (and diplogin as a symlink)
	icmpinfo-1.10
		icmpinfo
		netdate
	pidentd-2.6.1
		in.identd
	traceroute-4.4BSD
		traceroute
	ytalk-3.0.2
		ytalk
	net-tools-1.2.0
		(see above for 1.32-alpha)
(bootpc.v050, dip-3.3.7o, and icmpinfo-1.11 exist).

NetKit-B-0.06 (Sept 94) contains these:
	comsat ftpd
	libtelnet portmap.old
	rdist routed
	rpcgen rshd
	rwall slattach.new
	finger tftp
	lpr arp
	rexecd timed
	rpcgen.new rarpd
	rwho rpc.rusersd
	talkd rup
	fingerd sliplogin
	ping tftpd
	rlogin biff
	rpcinfo inetd
	rwhod rcp
	telnet rpc.rwalld
	ftp rusers
	portmap talk
	rlogind rsh
	slattach telnetd
There are also more recent packages for many of these programs than
what's included in here.

nfs-server-2.2beta16 contains:
	rpc.mountd
	rpc.nfsd

bind (various incarnations of 4.9.3, -p1 is Dec 95) contains:
	named
	named-xfer
	named.reload
	named.restart
	ndc
	dig
	dnsquery
	host
	nslookup

Not to mention a sh*tload of other packages like apache/httpd,
wu-ftpd, irc, etc, etc, etc...

I'm trying to recompile all my networking software. It's all very
confusing, and time-consuming trying to work out what's what :-(
And frustrating to find that a lot of the older stuff simply doesn't
compile with gcc-2.7.2/libc-5.3.12/linux-2.0.0 without (usually minor,
sometimes major) hacking.

Aargh! [gimme another valium... another of the NetKit-A-0.10 packages
failed to compile!]

It seems that new sets of networking code packages need to be released
for linux, and it would be really, REALLY nice if it was all put
together in nice packages in the spirit of how the NetKits were done.
It would certainly save people like myself who don't know the various
networking tools very well a lot of heartache.

Cheers
Tony
