argl... exactly the scenario I was afraid of :-O
I just checked my syslog file. I've never booted
the 1.3.96. I've ran the 1.3.95 for 7 days without
any problem. Then I patched to 97... never tried
the 1.3.96. Sorry for these misleading informations !

The patched files in 1.3.96 :

linux/drivers/net/3c509.c
linux/drivers/net/Config.in
linux/drivers/net/Makefile
linux/drivers/net/Space.c
linux/drivers/net/a2065.c
linux/drivers/net/ariadne.c
linux/drivers/net/ariadne.h
linux/drivers/net/atarilance.c
linux/drivers/net/de4x5.c
linux/drivers/net/de4x5.h
linux/include/net/tcp.h
linux/net/README
linux/net/ax25/af_ax25.c
linux/net/ax25/ax25_in.c
linux/net/ax25/ax25_out.c
linux/net/ax25/ax25_timer.c
linux/net/bridge/br.c
linux/net/core/dev.c
linux/net/core/iovec.c
linux/net/core/skbuff.c
linux/net/ipv4/Config.in
linux/net/ipv4/icmp.c
linux/net/ipv4/ip_fragment.c
linux/net/ipv4/ip_sockglue.c
linux/net/ipv4/tcp.c
linux/net/socket.c

no... the only thing I remember is that I've lost
several times the BIOS settings. I'll experiment
a bit with those parameters. I don't know if it can
play a role... but I restored the interupts of the PCI
cards to the old settings, as well as the "major" parameters
(shaddowing). The problem may also exist
