Hi - I'm new to this list, pardons if this has already been covered...

I'm setting up gated on a 486 running Caldera Network Desktop, kernel
v1.2.13. This machine uses 2 3Com 3c509 cards, and can see both networks.

The kernel has been compiled with IP_Forwarding enabled, as well as
Multicasting, IPX, NFS, and a bunch of other stuff. I've installed gated
and can get it to run successfully. I'm using just "rip yes;" in the gated,
along with some static route declarations; gated goes out and discovers
routes to my portmaster, other routers, etc. Even looks past my firewall to
find routes! There are no other routers in either of the two nets I wish to
route between.

All my attempts to use this machine as a router have failed. I'm not sure if
the problem is in my gated.conf or if the kernel is NOT passing packets from
one card to the other. On machines in each net I declare a static route to
the *other* net using the Linux machine's network card on the local net as
the gateway. Is this right? I can telnet *to* the linux machine, and from
there to the other net, in both directions; I just can't telnet *through*
the linux machine to hosts on the other net.

I'm looking for an example of how to configure this machine as a router
between 2 private nets. I've browsed through the postscript gated manual,
and confess it isn't making much sense to me. The net-2 howto covers it
briefly, and the setup example works for me, but it still won't route. I'm
bewildered!

Thanks to all in advance
